A classification and division essay requires you to discuss how object or ideas can be grouped into specific categories (classification) and how objects or ideas might be separated into parts (division). Once you have settled on a topic and have gone through the various steps of pre-writing, organizing and constructing and outline, you’re ready to write a great classification and division essay in 7 simple steps:
In your introduction, you want to clearly identify your topic. In this kind of essay this means identifying the group you are classifying and the group you are separating. For example, this may mean grouping horror films and dividing horror films by genre (e.g., slasher films and psychological thrillers).
Each body paragraph should have its own topic which points towards your central argument. Arrange your body paragraphs in whatever order you feel is the most logical. If you want to first discuss a group as a whole before taking each separate part that is fine. Just be sure you don’t discuss more than one topic in each paragraph.
Your conclusion should draw together the various types and approaches you have examined in your essay. Offer a brief comment on each topic, summarizing its value and limitations, then synthesize the content to show your reader how your argument has been proven with the evidence you have presented.
To revise means to critique your paper as a whole and find ways to improve on it by either reorganizing your arguments, taking out content, and possibly even writing new content. The goal is to make your paper stronger.
When you proofread your paper you should do so in three levels: the first is at the paper level, the second at the paragraph level, and the third is at the sentence level. Be sure you check for grammar, punctuation and spelling. Any one of these mistakes can cost you a grade.
When you edit your paper you look for ways to improve its readability. Check that you use the simplest and clearest language. Don’t use long words where short ones will say the exact same thing. Look for ways to improve your sentence structure as well.
The final touches are often left out or forgotten by students. You should make sure that your margins are even, that there are equal spaces between lines and paragraphs. Make sure you have included page numbers (if required) as well.
